Can I run an aftermarket stereo through my ford factory amp?
I have a 1995 mustang with premium sound and want to know if a JBL stereo that puts out 50×4 will run through my factory amp and speakers. Will this hurt the amp?
If you want to keep your factory amp in the system, your best option is to use an adapter interface like this one: http://www.logjamelectronics.com/piehrcford.html
This will help match the output of the new head unit to the ideal input level at the factory amp.
If it’s just a 4-speaker premium system, then there’s really no advantage to keeping the stock amp, and it’s very easy to bypass it. If it’s a Mach system (can’t remember if that option was available on the 95 Mustang) then it makes sense to keep the stock amp in the system, unless you replace the speakers.
